Driving Through Bangalore Traffic: Living The City Life

Bangalore Blog | Daily Commute | Traffic Tales | City Life
Step into chaos and charm with me on my daily adventures. I live in Bangalore—a city celebrated for its breezy weather, iconic status as India’s OG IT hub, and a start-up culture that’s always buzzing. But let’s be real… the weather right now? Anything but cool. It’s a blazing 33°C outside, and the heat is far from forgiving.

When the City Blooms: Bangalore’s Pink Season
A silver lining though – the trees right now are serving major Instagram energy!
Come Feb, March and April, Bangalore transforms into a pastel day dream, thanks to the Pink Trumpet trees—or Tabebuia rosea. They may look like Cherry Blossom trees, but—they’re not. These South American stunners were brought in by the British during colonial times, and now? They give the city its very own Cherry Blossom vibe. So while the weather app screams “sweat mode activated,” the streets are busy pretending they’re part of a romantic K-drama montage. Trust Bangalore to throw in a floral filter to distract us from the heat!

The Weather Woes
Hopefully, by the end of May, we’ll see the city reclaim its title of “ the ultimate weather “! Well, the weather is still a tad bit better than many other cities at this time, even if it’s not pleasant enough. With more people, construction, and pollution, Bangalore’s weather just isn’t what it used to be.

Driving in Bangalore

But when you live here, you quickly realise there’s a lot more than what meets the eye.

Take my daily odyssey to the office, for instance. It’s 15 km away and often feels like a full-blown tango with traffic. I drive an automatic car (thankfully!), which makes the journey a little less exhausting because navigating Bangalore’s bumper-to-bumper crawl is not for the faint-hearted.

That said, I genuinely enjoy driving in Bangalore! It gives me a sense of freedom—my little escape from the everyday grind. It’s my personal me-time, where I tune into my favourite songs or simply savour the quiet moments that make me feel at peace.

Of course, the city’s infamous traffic ensures I have my share of long hauls. And then there are those rare, magical days—when you catch every green light at just the right time, glide past intersections, and feel like the universe is finally on your side. It’s these little wins along the way that truly make my day.

Bangalore Roads: Where Rules Are Optional

Oh, and did I mention—always be on the lookout for bikes and autos that swoop in like dragonflies out of nowhere! They are the true daredevils on the roads—fearless, unpredictable, and seemingly unaware that lanes or traffic signals exist.

And let’s not forget the incredibly thoughtful pedestrians who cross the road with their backs to oncoming traffic—because why face danger when you can ignore it, right? If you’ve encountered this, on Bangalore roads, you know exactly what I mean.

So yes, as drivers, we’re clearly the only ones expected to stay alert—because no one else seems to be watching out.

Some days, waiting at signals feels like time itself has hit pause. Especially at one particular junction( the great St John’s signal) ; where, for reasons unknown, our direction always stays red the longest.

Meanwhile, hawkers and street vendors spring into action—moving from car to car, selling everything from cut fruits to car chargers.

My golden rule? Never roll down the window unless you really want to buy something. A firm eye contact avoidance usually does the trick.

Not Your Usual Bangalore Traffic Signal Moment

One evening, after work, I was waiting at a signal near UB City when a young girl who was selling roses approached my car. She tapped on my window, and I politely signalled that I wasn’t interested. But she was persistent.I rolled down the window slightly to repeat myself, but it completely got rolled down instead; —and that’s when she suddenly thrust her hand inside and began aggressively tugging at my shirt. Caught off guard, I calmly explained that I didn’t have any cash—my wallet was in the back seat. But she continued tugging me aggressively.

Startled, I firmly told her to stop or I’ll have to call the police. That’s when her demeanour changed. She grew angry and started hurling words at me—“stupid,” “nonsense”—in English, her eyes filled with a strange intensity that was genuinely unnerving.

The signal turned green, and just as quickly as it had all begun, she withdrew her hand and stepped back. I drove away, shaken and trying to process what had just happened.

Bangalore traffic teaches you patience, but moments like these remind you that staying alert isn’t just for potholes and signal-hoppers—it’s for the unexpected surprises too. Safe to say, my window now rolls down only for toll booths and playlists!

When Bangalore Traffic Brought Out the Best in People

Then there are those unexpected good samaritan moments that restore back your faith in people.

Once, as I was easing out of a narrow lane onto a busy main road, I misjudged a turn—and before I knew it, my left car wheel ,slipped into a small depression that opened into a larger pit. Impatient horns blared behind me, urging me to move, but the car wouldn’t budge. I tried to think of ways to get out of this situation—the only option that came to my mind was calling for a tow.

But to my surprise, a few kind strangers nearby rushed over. They quickly assessed the situation and calmly guided me to reverse slowly. Around four people lifted the front of my car together. And just like that—within seconds—it got free!

In the middle of peak-hour chaos, this spontaneous act of kindness unfolded like a blessing. I wanted to thank each one of them properly, but in the confusion—and with the traffic pressing on behind me—they disappeared before I could.

In the middle of the madness, this small act stood out—proof that there’s still kindness on our roads!

From Gridlocks to Zen: My Daily Drive in Bangalore

My daily rendezvous with traffic usually stretches to 1.5 hours each way—and on those “extra special” days, it can easily touch 2 hours. I’ve seen people having their breakfast and lunch in the car, because hey, if you’re going to be parked at a signal anyway, might as well multitask!

Still, despite the gridlock, I genuinely prefer driving myself over depending on cabs or public transport. Wondering why?

Well, for starters, the metro doesn’t connect all the dots yet. Getting a cab during peak hours feels like trying to win a lucky draw. The prices quoted will have you wondering if you accidentally selected a round-trip to Nandi Hills instead! And our beloved auto drivers in Bangalore? Some throw out fares that feel like they’ve been picked out of a hat, while others just say a breezy ‘illa’ (no) and ride off like nothing happened.

So yes, despite the long drives and bumper-to-bumper drama, I’m quite content steering my way— sipping sips of sanity between traffic signals and learning the patience of a monk.

Amidst the honks, the heat and unpredictable chaos all around, there’s still this feeling of joy that’s oddly comforting. Even if it’s messy, it’s amazing to fall in love with Bangalore one bumpy ride at a time!
